Salvaging Fire-Damaged Timber in Michigan
Abstract
Abstract Most wildfire effects appraisal systems suggest that the value of salvageable dead or damaged trees should be included to determine the net economic impact of the fire. However, little information on how to estimate salvage values has been available, and salvage values are often neglected in postfire value change appraisals. A survey of forest managers in Michigan provided statistics on salvage occurring in Michigan from 1980 to 1983. Uses to which wildfire-damaged timber is put and problems in marketing damaged timber are identified. Guidelines are suggested for wildfire effects appraisers to use in estimating salvage values after fires. North. J. Appl. For. 4:149-152, Sept. 1987.
