Numerical Study: Bending Behavior of Stiffened Hollow Glulam Beams
Abstract
Glulam is an emerging engineering structural member. It has numerous advantages and is environmentally sustainable. For material savings, the solid glulam beam is made hollow with some stiffeners inside it. The stiffened hollow glulam beam’s load-carrying capacity is affected by the thickness of each member in the beam, length of the beam, spacing of stiffeners, the width of the beam, and depth also. The present study carried out a numerical investigation using a finite element model developed in ANSYS Workbench 2022 R1. It mainly focuses on the variation of the thickness of each member in the beam such as the top plate, bottom plate, side plate and stiffeners. The thickness is varied from 15mm to 30 mm and its load-carrying capacity is studied. The variation of the stiffener thickness has not much effect on the load-carrying capacity, whereas the side plate thickness has an increase of 27.53%. An increase in the top and bottom plate thickness has a considerable small variation in load-carrying capacity.
