Model scale exposed timber compartment fire experiments with wood crib fuel load
Abstract
Abstract A series of model-scale compartment fire experiments were performed to investigate the influence of different exposed timber area and configurations on the compartment fire dynamics. The experimental setup and part of the instrumentation (temperature, mass loss) are presented. The main findings from the compartment fire experiments with exposed timber are discussed with the current compartment fire experimental knowledge. The experimental results showed that the presence of exposed timber surfaces except for the exposed timber ceiling appears to influence the temperature development in the compartment and the fire duration. The number of exposed timber surfaces alone was not the governing parameter of self-extinguishment and it appears to be a function of geometry, openings and moveable fuel load.
