Vibration reduction indices of cross-laminated timber floors in combination with lightweight timber framed walls
Abstract
Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is a modern wood-based construction technology commonly used as the main load-bearing system, including both floors and walls, but it is also common to combine CLT floor elements with lighter timber framed walls. For estimating a building’s sound insulation, the vibration reduction indices between elements, Kij, is a key parameter. Although hybrid systems combining CLT and timber framing are relatively common, corresponding measurement data are scarce in the literature. In this paper, Kij is measured for a cross-junction under laboratory conditions for an experimental setup consisting solely of CLT panels, and for a configuration in which the CLT wall elements are replaced by lightweight timber framed walls. The largest difference was observed in the vertical direction – from one wall, through the floor, to the opposite wall. The measurement results were also compared with values reported in the literature and with predictions based upon ISO standards.
