Development of Hybrid Multi-Angle Laminated Timber Panel for Bridge Deck Applications for advancing sustainability
Abstract

With growing demands to combat global warming, timber's carbon-fixing properties, aligned with carbon neutrality, have attracted significant attention. Timber, as a recyclable and sustainable construction material, is being promoted for effective use. In the civil engineering sector, where reducing CO₂ emissions is imperative, the application of timber in structures—such as timber bridges and mid- to high-rise buildings—is being explored. To address the orthotropic nature of timber, this study focuses on developing multi-angle laminated timber, where thin timber layers are laminated with varying fiber orientations. This approach reduces the orthotropic effect and improves stiffness. The study compares the stiffness and isotropic characteristics of multi-angle laminated timber with other laminated models. Results show that multi-angle laminated timber demonstrates higher stiffness and exhibits near-isotropic behavior compared to conventional laminated models.
