Estimativa das emissões de gases de efeito estufa na produção do cross laminated timber
Abstract
The building sector accounts for approximately 34% of global CO2 emissions (2025), requiring ways to reduce its carbon footprint. Among the possible strategies, the use of construction systems made of biological materials, such as Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), based on wood, stands out, with the potential for temporary biogenic carbon storage and emission reduction. In this context, this study aims to estimate the GHG emissions from fossil fuel sources to produce 1 m³ of CLT panel. The method consisted of collecting and analyzing 12 Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) from manufacturers in 7 countries and 3 continents, considering the cradle-to-gate (A1-A3) scope. Brazil is not included in the sample due to the lack of national data. The results indicate variations between 52.6 kgCO2-eq/m³ and 248 kgCO2-eq/m³, mainly due to energy matrices based on fossil fuels. It was found that energy consumption is the main factor in reducing emissions, highlighting the relevance of using renewable energies and by-products of the production process. As a contribution, the study establishes an order of magnitude of fossil emissions from the CLT and identifies the main factors that influence their variability, supporting future national studies.
