An Enhanced Anisotropic Peridynamic Approach to Simulate Flexural Behavior of Laminated Veneer Lumber Beams
Abstract
The use of engineered wood products is becoming increasingly widespread in sustainable construction. However, due to the anisotropic nature of wood, predicting its fracture behavior is particularly complex. Hence, accurate prediction of fracture behavior in these materials carries significant research implications and practical value. To overcome this limitation, this study takes the commonly used Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) material in modern timber structures as an example to explore the numerical simulation of crack propagation within engineered wood products. Specifically, an enhanced peridynamic model was developed to simplify the interacting surface contact problem of the hinge supports via a particle-compacted rotational modeling scheme. The proposed modeling scheme was rigorously calibrated through a set of physical tests where LVL with four different wood species were tested. Furthermore, the short-range repulsive force constant of the peridynamic model was calibrated according to the tested data. The constant critically governed the particle penetration, controlled the failure modes, and maintained the boundary stability. Results confirmed that the method effectively predicted the failures of the LVL beams under bending deformations. Comparative analysis demonstrated the superiority of the peridynamic approach over the FEM in modeling discontinuous fracture problems.
