The fire performance of joint between DELTABEAM ® and timber slabs.
Abstract
Abstract DELTABEAM ® is a composite shallow floor beam with a closed cross‐section, which supports the slab on the beam ledge during erection stage. In composite stage floor loads are transferred to DELTABEAM ® through a compression arch against an inclined web in ambient temperature and in fire. Transverse reinforcement ties the beam and slabs together and secures the load transfer. Peikko has been investigating the performance of the joint area between DELTABEAM ® and timber floors because the combination of timber, concrete and steel is not yet comprehensively standardized. A research program with full‐scale load‐transfer tests, two‐hour charring test and 90‐minute loaded fire test was performed to prove that the assumed load transfer mechanism is established and maintained also with timber slabs. The tests included specimens in simulated fire condition where the beam ledge was completely removed. After the two‐hour loaded fire test in North America, DELTABEAM ® with cross‐laminated timber (CLT) slabs received an assembly approval from UL Solutions with design number L902. DELTABEAM ® with CLT slabs fulfilled all requirements for load bearing capacity, integrity, and insulation the entire 90 minutes (REI90). Tests proved that DELTABEAM ® does not require any additional fireproofing under the beam as well as the timber floor.
