HYSTERESIS PERFORMANCE OF SEISMIC PANEL DAMPERS USING CROSS-LAMINATED TIMBER PANELS
Abstract
The authors propose integrating cross-laminated timber (CLT) support structures within the seismic panel damper systems of steel-framed buildings. A previous study proposed using lag-screw bolts (LSBs) and hexagon head bolts as shear connectors to join steel members and CLT panels. Herein, shear panels damaged during earthquakes must be replaced with new panels. The proposed connection method with LSBs enables easy replacement of shear panels, requiring only the removal of the hexagon head bolts. This study focused on experimentally examining the elastic‒plastic behavior of replaced shear panels, assuming that they are damaged by external forces such as earthquakes. To investigate the hysteresis behavior of a shear panel damper with CLT support members, four experimental specimens were prepared, and cyclic loading tests were conducted. The total yield shear strength of the LSBs, as well as the allowable bending and shear strengths of CLT, were designed to exceed the ultimate shear strength of the shear panel. Consequently, no significant differences in hysteretic behavior were observed after shear panel replacement.
