Strengthening of timber floors with concrete-type adhesives
Abstract
Upgrading structures for higher working loads or restoring original design strength is an engineering task for structures of any material. This paper provides insights regarding a technique for strengthening timber floors that is low in cost and quick to implement; this technique uses epoxy-based polymer concrete to restore and upgrade the load-bearing capacity for renovation. The idea of this application focuses on combining the favourable characteristics of epoxy-based polymer concrete in compression and timber in tension into a composite structure. The bond between the components is of fundamental importance for the overall performance and has been approved by testing matured and unmatured specimens. Commercial products, modified in grain size and filling degree for this particular application, different arrangements, wood surface modification and the natural adhesion between timber and polymer concrete were tested. With this application a significant increase of the load-carrying capacity and a rigid bond between all components was achieved under short-term and long-term loading.
