Abstract

A condition assessment of several glued-aminated timbers recently removed from service was conducted on the ends of the timbers using stress wave nondestructive evaluation techniques. After the assessment, toughness tests were performed in the laboratory on specimens obtained from the timbers to determine residual strength. Several areas of deterioration from decay were found during the nondestructive assessment. Deterioration was verified during subsequent toughness testing. A statistical relationship was found to exist between nondestructive test measurements and toughness test results.
